Tuning In To the Intergalactic Purr
 
  he carillonning of a cathedral's bells is a magnificent and inspiring experience. But a deaf man, sitting in his house at some distance from the cathedral, would notice nothing- unless he was able to feel it through resonance. Thus, by cupping a crystal goblet in his hands, he could become aware of the carillonning.

In just such a manner, we humans can become faintly aware of a certain Intelligence which suffuses our galaxy. I speak of the Intelligence peculiar to the feline civilizations that abound in the Universe. In holding a purring cat in our hands, we acquire a vague, warm sense of that Intelligence: the purr is the dial-tone of a vast feline Internet.

Our deafness to this Intelligence is due to incomprehension of fundamental feline wisdom. For example, the essential purr-wisdom of serene passion escapes us; the very words seem oxymoronic. Of course, the catlike beings of the universe are equally uncomprehending of certain aspects of ape wisdom, particularly in the matter of self-deprecating humor, which makes no sense to a feline mind. We have much to teach each other, if we would only tune in...
